What a PNGTuber base is, and why you want one
The word gets used loosely. In practice a PNGTuber base means a character drawn deliberately plain — neutral hair, neutral clothes, flat colours — so it is easy to change into somebody specific. Artists share them so that people who cannot draw still get a decent-looking avatar.
The important detail people miss on their first try: a base is only useful if it includes the talking frame. One picture gives you a static image. Two pictures — the same character with the mouth open — is what lets streaming software make it talk. Bases floating around on image boards are frequently just the single resting pose, which is why they never seem to work.
Every base on this page is a pair. The talking frame is the same character with an open mouth and a slight lift of the head, which is the small movement that stops the swap looking mechanical.
Terms differ by artist, so check before you use somebody else's base: some are free for any use, some are personal-use-only, some ask for credit, and a few are paid. The bases here are free to use however you like, including on monetised channels, with no credit required.

Change the hair first
Hair shape and colour carry most of the recognition. Moving a base from short dark hair to long teal hair reads as a different character almost immediately.

Match your overlay, not your taste
Pick outfit colours that contrast with your stream background. A dark hoodie on a dark overlay disappears, however nice it looks on its own.

Add one memorable thing
Headphones, glasses or cat ears do a lot of work at thumbnail size. One distinctive element beats four subtle ones.

Check it small before you commit
Shrink the preview until it is the size of a corner cam. If you cannot tell the eyes apart at that size, raise the contrast.

Can I edit a base in Photoshop or Krita?
Yes. Download both frames of the base and paint over them like any other file. Just remember to make the same edit twice so the two frames still match.
What is the difference between a base and a template?
Nothing meaningful — people use both words for the same thing. A PNGTuber template sometimes implies extra expression frames, which is worth checking for.
Can I request more PNGTuber bases?

Do I need a base at all?
No — if you can draw, upload your own art instead of a base and the tool will still generate the talking frame and drive it from your mic.
